يسعى هذا البحث من جهة إلى التساؤل حول كيفية دراسة الفلاسفة اللهَ منذ بداية التصدع في صرح العصور الأوروبية الوسطى، التي كانت تفرض تصوراً لله خاصاً يتماشى ومصالحها اللاهوتية والسياسية، وكيف تغير الاهتمام من محاولة بناء براهين على وجود الله إلى الاهتمام بالبحث عن الله باعتباره موضوعاً فلسفياً محضاً. ومن جهة أخرى يحاول تقصي اهتمام علوم الأعصاب بالله وإدخاله المختبرات العلمية بغية تحديد مراكز المخ الخاصة بالخبرات الدينية، أي محاولة تعيين مكان الله في مخ الإنسان وتحديده. يحاول هذا البحث المحافظة على الحياد وعدم الاصطفاف في خندق من الخنادق المذكورة، تحرياً للموضوعية والمصداقية العلمية.
