يتناول البحث مفهوم الغريب القرآني ومناهج التأليف فيه، موضحاً أن الغريب هو ما خفي معناه من ألفاظ التنزيل واحتاج إلى بيان بالرجوع إلى لسان العرب، وهو أمر نسبي يختلف باختلاف معارف الناس وسليقتهم اللغوية التي تأثرت باتساع الفتوحات واختلاط الألسن. كما يستعرض العمل مسارين رئيسيين في التصنيف: الأول يعتمد الترتيب حسب ورود الآيات في المصحف كصنيع علي بن أبي طلحة وأبي عبيدة، والثاني يعتمد الترتيب المعجمي الهجائي، سواء بحسب ظاهر اللفظ دون تجريد كالسجستاني، أو وفق الجذور الأصلية للكلمات بعد تجريدها كما فعل الهروي والراغب الأصفهاني.
