تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى إبراز الأهمية التي تحظى بها فلسفة جون دیوي (John Dewey) البراغماتية، والتي تميزت بطابعها الاجتماعي؛ حيث اهتمت بمعالجة مختلف القضايا العملية، والتي تخص وضع الإنسان في المجتمع، قصد تطويره وتحسين شروط عيشه. لقد دعا ديوي إلى إعادة بناء الفلسفة وتجديدها، من خلال مراجعة مفاهيمها وأسلوبها وغاياتها، لكي تستجيب لتطلعات المجتمع وتغيراته المستمرة. لقد بحث ديوي في الطبيعة البشرية والسلوك الإنساني، كما ناقش القضايا التربوية والأخلاقية والثقافية والفنية والسياسية، باعتبارها قضايا عملية متفاعلة، تتقاطع في خدمة التجربة الإنسانية في المجتمع، وتعتبر الممارسة الديمقراطية والافعال الأخلاقية، من مقومات بناء المشروع الاجتماعي الناجح والمتطور الذي يحفز الناس للأمل في المستقبل المزدهر، الشيء الذي جعل لفلسفة ديوي امتدادا في المرحلة المعاصرة مع الفلاسفة البراغماتيين الجدد.
