تتأسس الفلسفة السبينوزية على مدخل إبستمولوجي خصب يتقاطع بعمق مع بعض مرتكزات العقلانية اليونانية، مع انتمائها الواضح إلى سياق الحداثة الفكرية في القرن السابع عشر. ولم تكن عودة سبينوزا إلى التراث الإغريقي مجرد استحضار تاريخي سلبي، وإنما مثلت بحثًا في شروط إمكان نسقه الفلسفي القائم على جعل العقل معيارًا للفهم، والنظر إلى الطبيعة بكونها نظامًا منسجمًا تحكمه قوانين الضرورة. غير أن هذه الاستعادة اتسمت بتوتر نقدي خلاق، إذ أقام سبينوزا تمييزًا داخل العقلانية الإغريقية نفسها، واتخذ موقفًا نقديًا صارمًا من بعض أقطابها، وفي مقدمتهم سقراط وأفلاطون وأرسطو، في مقابل اهتمامه بحكماء الطبيعة الأوائل والفلاسفة الذريين، مثل ديموقريطس وأبيقور ولوكريتيوس.
