شهدت قبيلة زعير خلال القرن العشرين تحولات اقتصادية واجتماعية عميقة، بفعل التغلغل الاستعماري الفرنسي الذي أحدث قطيعة واضحة مع أنماط العيش التقليدية السائدة، فقد أعاد الاستعمار تنظيم المجال الفلاحي بزعير عبر مصادرة الأراضي الجماعية وتوجيهها نحو الاستغلال العصري المرتبط بالاقتصاد الفرنسي الرأسمالي، كما عمل على إدماج السكان المحليين في الاقتصاد النقدي من خلال فرض الضرائب وتشجيع العمل المأجور، مما أدى إلى تراجع أنماط التضامن القبلي التقليدية، وأسهمت هذه السياسات في تفكك البنية القبلية لزعير القائمة على العصبية والقرابة وافتصاد الكفاف، بالإضافة إلى ظهور فئات اجتماعية جديدة، وهم الملاكين الجدد مثل المعمرون الفرنسيين، والعمال الزراعيين، والوسطاء المحليين المرتبطين بالإدارة الاستعمارية.
