منذ القرن التاسع عشر، شكّلت حاضرة طرفاية مسرحًا للتنافس الاستعماري بين بريطانيا وإسبانيا وفرنسا، نظرًا لموقعها الإستراتيجي وقربها من الأسواق الإفريقية، تصدّى السلطان مولاي الحسن الأول لهذه الأطماع بدبلوماسية حازمة وحركات عسكرية سنتي 1882 و1886، وأثمر الضغط المخزني والمقاومة الشعبية اعتراف بريطانيا بالسيادة المغربية على طرفاية سنة 1895، لكن إسبانيا احتلتها عسكريًا سنة 1916، واستمر الكفاح الشعبي إلى أن التحقت المنطقة بجيش التحرير المغربي، بعد معارك ضارية سنة 1957-1958، اضطرت إسبانيا للجلاء، واستُرجعت طرفاية نهائيًا إلى المغرب في أبريل 1958، في خطوة جسّدت استكمال الوحدة الترابية.
