يتناول البحث وضع الإماء السوداوات داخل المجتمع التطواني خلال القرن 19م من منظور التاريخ الاجتماعي، عبر تحليل أشكال الاستغلال والعلاقات الأسرية التي نسجت داخل البيوت الحضرية الثرية. ويركز البحث أيضا على مظاهر الاستغلال الجنسي للإماء وآثاره الاجتماعية، وعلى وضعية أبنائهن بين الاحتواء العائلي والإقصاء المرتبط باللون والنسب. كما يكشف عن الكيفية التي تحول بها نظام الرق إلى بنية اجتماعية كرست التراتبية والتمييز داخل المحتمع التطواني. ويعتمد البحث على قراءة تحليلية للسردية المحلية لإبراز تاريخ الفئات المهمشة وإعادة مساءلة العلاقة بين العبودية والسلطة والهوية الاجتماعية.
