لقد عني المستشرقون بدراسة التاريخ الإسلامي والسيرة النبوية لكنهم لم يكونوا في الغالب منصفين ولا محايدين بل كانوا يحاولون دس الدسائس في السيرة والسنة لتشويه الإسلام وزعزعة عقائد المسلمين وهذا ما فعله كارل بروكلمان في دراسته للسيرة النبوية في القسم الذي خصصه لها فلم يلتزم الدقة العلمية والحياد اللازم ولا الموضوعية.
